8 Ways to Make a Meaningful Contribution to Your Community

Volunteering is rewarding and worthwhile in many ways.  You help further the mission of a community you believe in, use your time in a meaningful way, and often make new friends.  

As April is National Volunteer Month (as established by President George Bush in 1991), we’ve found some ways you can contribute within   the local community.  






1Organization: Friends Indeed 


Supports: Homeless and Food-Insecure Populations 
Location:   444 East Washington Blvd., Pasadena, CA
Availability: usually mid-day on Weekdays

About: Help   receive and sort food donations in the food pantry, Assist with preparing   lunch and activities for the unhoused clients of the women’s room. 






2Organization: Food Forward 


Supports:   Those living with   food insecurity
Location: work with teams in various   locations
Availability: various days & times,   often weekends, very flexible

About:   Dedicated to   eliminating food waste, Food Forward organizes Volunteers to harvest fruit   from trees in their own neighborhoods, collect surplus produce from local   farmers markets, glean freshly grown food from local farms, and support in   creative ways.






3Organization: Habitat for Humanity 


Supports:   Families in need   of good housing, communities that need revitalization
Locations: multiple location including Pasadena, Monrovia, Duarte   & Los Angeles

 About: Search for a   volunteer opportunity near you and click the email link to reach the Build   Leader Habitat for Humanity partners with people in communities to help them   build or improve a place to call home. Habitat homeowners help build their   own homes alongside volunteers while building a better life for themselves   and for their families. There are many opportunities to build or repair homes   with families, as well as to assist at a local Habitat ReStore 





4Organization: The Nature Conservancy 

Supports: the environment & nature
Location: various local options (worldwide)
Availability: mostly weekends or full days   off

About: The Nature Conservancy is a world-wide Non-profit   program dedicated to improving the environment. Impacting communities in over   70 countries, TNC Volunteers work to clean up the land and waters, and to implement   sustainable initiatives.  





5Organization: Optimist Youth Homes

Supports: At-Risk Youth
Location:   Highland Park and Los Angeles
Availability: various times, often afternoons and weekends


About:   Optimist Youth Homes provides a stable home, life   skills and therapeutic services for at-risk youth.  Help by mentoring a foster kid, leading an   art or sports program or teaching a life skill





6Organization: Pasadena   Village

Supports: Older Adults
Location: 236 W. Mountain Street, Pasadena
Availability: various times

About:   The Pasadena Village is a community of Older Adults   (55+) who come together for social activities, support and education. Right   now, there is a need to assist community members in learning new technology!





7Organization: Remainders Creative Reuse

Supports: reduces waste in   landfills and supports arts in the community

Availability: flexible hours, weekdays and weekends

About:   Remainders   accepts no-longer needed fabric, sewing materials, craft supplies and more,   then functions like a thrift shop specifically for crafters and   artisans.  Volunteer to accept   donations, sort supplies, cut fabric for shoppers and more. Purchasing credit   may be available in exchange for your volunteer hours.





8Organization: Special Olympics 

Supports: empowerment of special needs children with intellectual disabilities 
Location: various locations in LA County and everywhere
Availability: on weekends, days off or   afternoons off

About: The   power of sports brings together volunteers and people with intellectual   disabilities to discover new strengths and skills, and to find success. Special  athletes find happiness, confidence and fulfillment through their sport and  the goal is to translate into life success. Help out with a one-time event or  coach athletes on a regular schedule.There are also opportunities to assist with administrative or  fundraising efforts.  A Volunteer Basketball Coach is needed in the Pasadena area now!
